Excursion to Ancient Asini - Tolo

Tolo, Ancient Asini & Prophet Elias

The Acropolis of Anceint Asini is located on the Kastraki headland just on the out skirts of Tolo, and, at a height of 330m the views over to Tolo and Plaka Beach in Drepano are wonderful. Homer reminds us of Ancient Asini when he talks of Asini, Argos, Tiryns, Epidaurus sending ships off to the Trojan war. Climb the headland, see the ruins of pre-historic settlements and ancient walls, the citadel and on the other side of the road on Barbouna hill, Mycenaean graves. Ancient Asini has recently been made more visitor friendly and now has a digital presentation on site which is great to see.

Profitis Elias is a small mountain in the village of Asini, with a chapel (Profitis Elias) on the top. The climb up mountain is steep with 500 steps but not very difficult and from the top there are breathtaking views of Tolo, Drepano, Vivari, even Iria when the weather is clear and on the other side Karathona beach and of course the villages of Assini, Lefkakia, Pyrgiotika.

Tolo is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece and is runs the length of a beautiful bay, just 12kms south of Nafplio. The crystal clear sea and golden sandy beach at one end of the village are enjoyed by all and there are many facilities for watersports, waterskiing, windsurfing and scuba diving. Motorboats and pedalos can be rented and a visit to one of the islands in the bay is a must. The islands of Romvi and Coronis are even close enough to swim to where one is able to see the ruins of a middle age castle. On the island of Daskalio, the church of Zodochou Pigi is situated, where the "secret school" was held during the revolution of 1821. In Tolo there is something to suit all tastes, all on the seashore or a short walk including cafeterias, tavernas with fresh fish from the local fishermen.

Time: approx. 4 hours

View of the village from afar

A hidden gem next to the popular resort of Tolon. We first visited the Asine Acropolis on a holiday to Tolon in 2000. In those days there was not very much to see and what there was entailed clambering over rocks with not much idea of how the site was laid out. Our latest inspection was something of a revelation as the site has been completely transformed and all for the better. It is now possible to walk the circumference of the acropolis assisted by various walkways which give access to lost of interesting features and some stunning views. There is also an audio visual display in a new building near the entrance which gives lots of useful information (and even has attached toilets). A bonus is the on site small church (which we had previously visited) and which is now incorporated into the site proper and has a beautiful interior, not to be missed. Congratualtions to everyone responsible for making the site so accessible.

500 steps to the top but worth it! Amazing 360 degree view of Tolo, Asini, Lefkakia, Drepano, Vivari, Karathona, the Argolic gulf, even Spetses island!
