Excursion to Palamidi - Distillery

Argolida from another perspective

The Palamidi Castle overlooks the whole of Napflion from its location on a hill in the middle of the town. Built by the Venetians from 1711 to 1714 this fortress is the last of its kind built by them abroad and also one of the most impressive. Unfortunately the Turkish defeated the Venetians and conquered the castle just a year after it was built. From the mid 1800s the castle was used as a prison and it was then that the steps were constructed, all 999 of them! We take you up by road to the back of the castle and there you have some time to ramble about this huge site. See Kolokotronis cell and take in the breathtaking views.

Visit the local ouzo distillery and see how ouzo and other liqueurs are made on a guided tour around the place. Partake of a tasting of their products with a small meze and visit their one of a kind ouzo museum and learn about their long history. There is a shop that you are able to buy Karonis products from if you like.

About a half mile out of main tourist area, but so worth the extra trip. The Karonis family members will warmly greet you and personally escort you through their small but fascinating museum and distillery operation. You will learn how their great grandfathers travelled to France in 1865 to learn the distilling business and arranged for the purchase of the unique equipment. It is a fascinating story of entrepreneurship. Next you will visit the distillery itself to learn how the ouzo and special spirits are made and finally you are treated to the tasting area. The Karonis only sell their products in Greece and their enthusiasm and ability to converse in 4 or 5 languages is both heartwarming and impressive. Don't miss this one; a real gem!
